Welcome to Perfect Moment Mondays hosted by Lori of Weebles Wobblog.
I work with medically fragile adults as a RN Case manager. It's humbling to talk with these folks, so much for them is a struggle. They are old before their time with the wear and tear of a 75 y/o in their 30 or 40 y/o body. The medical and pyschosocial issues can be quite daunting for some of my patients including no money for necessities, doctors with zero compassion, and dual diagnoses, (fancy MedSpeak for a person with both medical and pyschological diagnoses like bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, you know, fun stuff.)
I was talking with a patient who is trying to find a provider to treat her for a severe dental condition for which she has no insurance coverage or money. She started to explain to me that she had always had regular cleanings and check ups. I said to her, "I'm here to help you, not judge you."
I meant it.
A couple weeks ago, my older son and I went out for dinner at our favorite local coffee shop, Lily's Cafe. (Which is wonderful btw if you are ever in the Newhall, California area.) As we were finishing up our meal and I prepared to pay the bill, it struck me, how much freedom I have. The ability to go out safely in public, have my own money, be able to drive my own car, and have the ability to express myself whether it's with my choice of clothing, spouse, number of children, internet use, or my vote, are gifts too precious for words. Not one I take lightly but one I frequently take for granted.
Which is kind of the point isn't it?
Has the Universe opened up your heart, mind, or spirit lately?

I love this, Martha, because you reminded me that my glass is overflowingly full with the good stuff.
Blessings to your clients. I'm sure you are one of them (a blessing, not a client!).
I try to notice something that I'm lucky to see every day. The week before last, while I was driving to work, a bald eagle flew above me on the road - first time I've ever seen that, and I was much impressed! Anyway, just recognizing good fortune keeps it coming, in my opinion.
It must be very emotionally tiring to work with your clients. They're lucky to have you, I think.
Always an amazing gift to give yourself a reality check. Thanks for reminding me how lucky I am today!
What a beautiful realization! It's heartbreaking to try to help people with monumental challenges (I worked as a mental health counselor and saw my fair share), but it's nice that you can turn it into appreciation for your own blessings.
Yesterday was a big day for us, Father's Day. There were many, many times in the past when I thought my husband and I would not be able to have children. We took our small son to the Mariner's game -- his first baseball game -- and we had such a lovely time. It never left my mind what a gift it was to be able to see my beloved husband be a super father to our amazing son.
wonderful post... its those times that make me stop, wonder, and think about all that i am and all that i have...
I am guilty of taking such things for granted! Funny how we manage to do just that (take things for granted) until they are gone.
Thanks for the insight! I know I needed it!
Beautiful post! Sometimes it's easy to forget how blessed we are...
You have a very meaningful job. I hope it is not emotionally draining.
Thanks for reminding me of everything I have. My health, my freedom, all of the little things that i do take for granted.
really lovely post, martha, i enjoyed reading it. as you know, ive been struggling quite a bit lately and i feel my eyes have been opened to quite a few things. now im wondering what's next, and while i don't have the slightest idea, i rather feel i see the situation with clearer eyes... thank you for all your kind thoughts and good energy through it all... xox... annie
Martha, once I got older and experienced losing loved ones to cancer, I've never, ever taken any day for granted. Each day we are given is truly a blessing. Wonderful post...
Wonderful entry Martha! You're right, we have to stop and appreciate the everyday things because so many don't have such luxuries! We are blessed!
