Lessons from My Dad

My Dad has taught me many things including-

Late planes just get later. (The corollary to this travel caveat is you must be on time. Trains, planes, and Dad waits for No One.)

The importance of being polite to everyone from the CEO to the coffee shop cashier.

Learning a few words of a foreign language will make your trip much more fun.

The best line in the world to wait in is the Broadway TKTS line in Times Square, NYC.

One of the joys of growing older is being close friends with your Mom even though she mercilessly and consistently beat you at any and all card games.

You are never too old to swing, groove, and Rock-N-Roll.

Talk softly but carry a big stick.

Keeping flexible through exercise keeps your mind nimble too.

Pay attention to your finances or you won't have anything to pay attention to.

Your word is your bond.

A good swear word (or two, or three, or six with creative combinations thereof) never hurt anybody and is usually very therapeutic.

Strong men cry, laugh, and know how to play.

Never forget to look up at the stars and that's actually a planet that you think is a star.

Books and black standard poodles make the best of friends.

Listening to your children is a gift they will carry with them all their lives.

You will always be loved and cherished. Thank you, Dad.

Wonderful! I can honestly say that my dad taught me almost all those things too - 'cept he never mentioned anything about a poodle!

Excellent words of wisdom. My dad has been gone for 9 years now, He was my best frined and I still miss him so much :-(

Awwww! Nice. Thanks for sharing.

Now if I listed some of the strange and bizarre things that I learned from my dad you would completely laugh. He's a character.

Awwww, what a nice tribute to your Dad, he is obviously a wise man, and sounds like he enjoys life while living smartly.

My favorite from my Dad is, "Gather your own information." DH used to be offended by this, but he's learned just to let me research and confirm the information even though he already gathered it. Because you never know... two people don't always interpret something the same way.

Ahhhhh. Now I know where you get your sensibilities and sensitivities.

Here was the issue we always faced with my dad (and I now have the same issue with my husband)...Dad waits for no one, but we always ended up waiting for dad. We'd all be ready, and he'd find one more thing he HAD to do before we left.

My dad's been gone for almost 18 years, and I still miss him most days.

Nice tribute to your father...they like to know they taught you something!

Lovely lessons from your Dad and wonderful timely post. My Dad died when I was 30 ... (about 34 years ago) ... but I still remember lessons he taught me ;--)

I like a good combination of swear words in creative combination's too! I would love to try your mom, my mom and you with me at a card game, we would probably lose too. But then again, I am pretty competitive, tell her to watch out for team Martha and Kalei vs the two moms!=)
