Negative Thinking tape track

I go hiking in the local mountains with my cousin weekly and in addition to working our tushes on the "butt buster" hills, it's also a great therapy chat session.

My cousin, Sue started snowskiing about 5 years ago when she was 40 years old. Her family enjoys the fresh air, exercise, and the beautiful scenery of skiing. Sue (like a lot of skiers including me) struggles with fear while skiing. Fear of falling, fear of getting hurt, crashed into, falling off a cliff precipice, the list goes on and on. She talked about how she starts thinking of all these "What Ifs?" and it takes away her enjoyment of the sport. I said to her, "Why don't you turn it around? The likelihood of any of those things happening is slim to none, the overwhelming odds are that you will be safe and sound at the bottom of the hill ready to get on the lift for the next run." We talked about instead of visualizing wipeouts and crashes to use the power of her thoughts to picture her successful and happy doing what she loved. She is going to try it.

I use this technique whenever I catch myself wallowing in the negative and focusing on my fears instead of the much more likely outcome of success.

Is there anything that you do to help you switch the negative off in your thoughts? Thank you so much and sending you warm, happy thoughts as always.

PostScript: The boys and I wear helmets when we ski because all the good visualization in the world isn't going to protect our heads when we do wipeout.

I do a similar technique. Mostly, It works. Those hikes sound great!

Very timely post.

Love that technique, and I can't believe this is the first time I've heard of it.

I'll use it with my kids. And with myself.

But not about skiing. Tooooo afraid for that.

Yeah, I totally use positive thinking and visualization for the things that I want or the outcomes I desire. Somehow if I rerun the scenario in my head of the desired outcome, most times it does go according to plan. I'm all for that Law of Attraction, The Secret, stuff! Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting! :)

Welllllllll, I try to do something that I enjoy or busy work like cleaning or reorganizing. Sometimes I rent an old movie and watch alone or do something creative or try to surround myself with positive or funny people. Some people aren't brimming with positivity but can easily laugh at themselves and the negatives of life. Oh, and if all else fails I do count on good old church on Sunday to recharge. I love hiking too but am not a skier. Those positive thinking tactics that you use sound very effective :)

I have a terrible problem with the negative track and the nasty little voice. Sometimes I say such ugly things to myself, I'd be shocked if I heard someone else say them. I will use a positive track and see how that works for me. I'm a little afraid of that, because I have a superstition that if I imagine the worse, it won't happen. Very annoying.

I try and do the same thing - it takes practice to switch those tapes around sometimes. I'm a pretty optimistic person to begin with so that helps. My biggest mantra lately is - today the kids are home and they are safe.

I do that too!

I mean, visualize on why it's scary ( my big fear = MOUNTAIN LIONS).

I've had all the meditation/visualization training a person can have, and I STILL forget to do it.

thanks for the reminder!

trying to move around some shiz in my life so positive thinking will be uber helpful...

Very timely post with my work life getting very hectic and I'm starting to worry I won't have time to prepare for these babies. Must keep up the positive thinking. Also timely with the Natasha Richardson accident. I feel so horrible for her family. Wearing a helmet is always a good idea.
