I wrote a letter to the Editor/Publisher of a community magazine in response to an article written about a local shopkeeper's near brush with death due to an aneurysm.
The writer of the article used the term, "male nurse" in describing how the local man learned of the seriousness of his condition.
Here is part of my letter-
Re: Well Suited Article, Elite Magazine, March 2009
Dear Publisher:
I would like to inform you, your editor, and the writer of the article, "Well Suited", that it is 2009 and both genders have been part of the Nursing profession for many years. I find the term, "male nurse" used in this article to be distracting, demeaning, and outdated. Do you use the term, "female physician" or "male physician" in your publications? Please extend to me and my professional Nursing colleagues the same courtesy.
Signed, Martha K., RN
I will let you know if I get a response. Some people need to be escorted and encouraged to come into the 21st century.

About four years ago my husband shattered his ankle up in Mammoth. He spent the weekend at the Mammoth Mountain Hospital getting his bones screwed back together. I have often joked that hubby is lucky I haven’t pushed him off a ski lift just so we can go back to that hospital to see HOT NURSE. When I mention Hot Nurse to men, they look at me kind of funny and they raise an eyebrow. I’m like, no you pervs, Hot Nurse is a guy. People still think nursing is a predominantly female field.
LMAO - you go lady!
Oh heavens...male nurse? That phrase seems so outdated as you said. Absolutely crazy. We had MAN in our nursing program. Male Association of Nurses...even at the time I thought it was silly. We don't have FAN Female association of nurses or anything. It's funny because we have almost the equal number of female and male CRNAs at work so it's never an issue. But until I got to anesthesia school it seemed that males were the minority. But we don't need to highlight it as thsi did. Great point and well put!
Thank you for doing the escorting! My opinion of Elite magazine? It's just one big advertisement with a few sprinklings of prominent SCV people who have an agenda.
Good for you!
It's always been odd to me that I have to venture to conferences and training classes to find out that my field is predominantly made up of men. All the places I've ever worked have been mostly women. As an adjunct of law enforcement, a male dominated field, I should not be surprised by the good-ole-boy/little-lady view that I occasionally encounter.
And we think we have evolved? Hmmm! :)
You go girl!
I love that you sent a letter! You rock!
2 snaps for you, my dear!
