I am inspired today by my bloggy friend, Lori of Weebles Wobblog to participate in a tribute to Mothers.
One of the prompts for the tribute is -
In what ways did your mom influence the woman you are today?
So here goes-
Mom taught me to appreciate the arts in all forms. That good music, books, and art are as necessary as food, water and shelter. I grew up helping my mom practice her lines for local theater productions and listening to her sing the Sinatra and Bennett Standards with my Dad's Big Band. She is never without a book in her purse and her nightstand.
She educated me and continues to do so with her expansive knowledge of art and antiques. My mom (at age almost 80 y/o) will still walk through antique shops, show me furniture or housewares, discuss the markings, talk about the provenence of the antique, and its' approximate value. Incroyable!!
She gave me her love of soil and growing things. She showed me how much fun it is to get my hands dirty. Everything from Cacti to vegetables, she's grown it and grown it well!
My mom taught me to cook and the love of good food. She used to call me everyday after school and talk me through the dinner prep step by step so she would come home to a home cooked meal! She was fearless about trying recipes, lobster crepes; chocolate mousse with ladyfingers; Chinese and Mexican food; pretty much anything.
My mom is inspiring in her quest for a good deal. She loves to prowl thrift stores and book sales for bargains. She then in turn sells them online for a tidy profit. (Not because she needs to, but because she CAN!!)
My parents have been married for almost 59 years. It's a testament in teamwork, devotion, and I don't know what else for the two of them to put up with each other, but It Works.
(I consider this a very good influence unlike the influences she exerted by having me make her an occasional vodka martini starting at age 13 y/o or flick her "bic" when she used to smoke cigarettes. Ah, the Good Old Days of the 1960s and 1970s. That stuff would probably result in a visit from Child Protective Services today. Miracle any of us baby boomers survived, Really. Now, back to the tribute...)
My mom is a Cat lover, Dog lover, animal lover, anything furry. All of her children are animal fanatics, I mean animal lovers. She can't watch nature programs where any animals get injured or die.
She taught me that we don't really "own" anything, we are just taking care of it for the next generation.
Mom gave me many gifts and I am blessed to have her in my life despite the ups and downs in our relationship. I thank her for the incredible strength that she modeled for me when caring for my dying brother over two decades ago. I hope I can give her the gift of forgiveness. I don't think she has forgiven herself.

what a wonderful and unique mother it seems you have... happy friday, have a great wkend!
I think I'd like to hang out with your mom...which means you have written a fantastic tribute (vodka martinis included!).
Sounds like you have a great mother. I feel my mother was great to me too. She taught me the value of an education and to value myself as an individual and not just a wife and mother. Unfortunately, though, my mother and I are having a very difficult time these days as she seems to be jealous of the things I've accomplished in life. It seems such a shame to me to instill so many values in me and then change into being as materialistic as her mother. I hope I don't change as she has as I get older. She doesn't seem to be the same person to me anymore - and she's only 17 years older than me, so saying that the change is due to becoming elderly. She's no where near retirement age. I also remember "flick my bic" commercials. We used to say that when we would use our Pez candy dispensers in the 70s, LOL!
Laughing so hard at the image of 13yo Martha making a vodka martini and lighting her mom's ciggy!
And you turned out great. I love how she passed on to you a love of the arts and of the earth.
Lovely words!
That's a wonderful tribute Martha. I wish I could be half the mother that my mother was/is. Thanks for sharing!
thats a great tribute, and your mom must be a great mom just based on what i know about you! hope your mom's day is as blessed and special as you richly deserve... xox..... annie
YAY to your mom for giving you an appreciation for the Arts...
Can you believe how many Mothers DON'T do that? ( especially boys, somehow - parents thinking their boys have to play football at the expense of being creative... Why? Because so many of them end up being football players?)
I soooo need to learn how to make things grow. One of my first orders of business once I get (knock on wood knock on wood knock on wood) in a house.
GREAT tribute to your mother!!
And the funnies today left on my post from YOU were rockstar awesome!!
Married almost 59 years!!! WOW, that's impressive. Your mom sounds like quite the character. Loved the tribute.
Enjoy your weekend and have a Happy Mother's Day!
I would flick my mom's bic back in the 80s! It seems so weird that most people smoked, in their houses and even in the stores...
What a wonderful tribute to your mom! If I can squeeze in the time this weekend I think I'll do the same :-)
hat a wonderful tribute to your mom. I hope you have a wonderful mother's day - you deserve it!
What a beautiful "tribute" to your mom! She sounds like a wonderful woman and she raised you to be the same! Thank you so much for sharing.
What a wonderful tribute.
I made vodka martinis also. And we did survive. I guess. :S
