Our dog, Charley is usually a very sound sleeper in his crate. However, last night, Charley cried and fussed throughout the night like a brand new puppy. My husband and I both went down to alternatively check, then yell at him to "Be Quiet!" My cat, Abigail was also on high alert last night, sitting on her perch by the window, instead of asleep as is her usual routine for 22 out of 24 hours. There was a disturbance in the animal kingdom.
I found out the cause of the pets' upset when I went outside this morning to walk Charley and found literally gobs and gobs of cat hair. It looks like the fur of possibly two of my neighbors' cats and luckily no blood. So hopefully that means it was just a cat fight and not an owl or coyote attack.
I live adjacent to the Santa Clara River which is a desert river which sounds like an oxymoron. A desert river's flows are seasonal based on rain. It also flows underground during the dry season, approximately 9 months out of the year. (Gee, aren't you glad you stopped by for this little geography lesson?) Anyway the riverbed is a direct "wildlife highway" for the coyotes, possums, bears, (Yes, we had a bear cub in our neighborhood almost twelve years ago!) and other creatures to come down from the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains to hunt, drink, and reclaim this territory from suburbia. It is not a place to have outdoor pets and another neighbor has lost several cats to coyotes. (They are slow learners I think. The humans, not the coyotes who learned really quickly that pets = reliable food source.) Our bunny, Copper got killed by an owl several years ago when she refused to go into her hutch one night. Pets are definitely not on the top of the food chain in my neighborhood.
I am relieved I don't have to deal with any injured (or worse) animals in my garden, as I plan to spend some time out there planning my garden and lawn "rehabilitation". First on the list is reseeding the lawn which looks like a mud pit. Of course, serious weeding, trimming, and debris clean up is needed. Then, onto the fun stuff, composting and mulching the flowerbeds, replenishing the bark under the tree swing, and then putting in flowers and seeds for lots of Spring, Summer, and Fall color. I was looking at Pacific Giant Primroses at the garden store yesterday and the flowers were so brilliant and happy. I also can't wait to go to the "Rock" Store and pick up a couple bags of river rocks to use in the front flower beds. I enjoy seeing the boulders, slabs of slate, and rocks of all sizes and colors. A couple years ago I put in a slate pathway in front of my husband's shop in the backyard. That was fun, and not as hard as I expected. I do like rocks, especially in a garden. I like yard work too, I enjoy getting my hands dirty and feel at peace working with Nature. Plus, nobody bothers you when you are pushing a lawnmower.
What's up with you this Wednesday?

That's pretty scary the idea of wild animals in the vicinity.
I also love gardening! Forget manicures, what I love is dirty nails!

I remember the days of being in California (bay area, Diablo Valley) all sorts of crazy combination of Coyotes/Dogs, Mountain Lions/Cats, and other fun that might be lurking in the bushes.
I remembered you had that nice poem by Henry Van Dyke in your December Post (I have a crazy memory like that) and was glad I remembered, because I borrowed it for a condolence for a friend of mine.....Thanks!
last time i was at my dad's - he doesn't live far from mt diablo - he told me all about the wild boars that came down and roamed around the streets. made me not want to run or walk or jog at all!!!!! im envious that you're digging in dirt! ours is still frozen! :)
Our little suburban area has some wildlife. I've seen the following in my front and back yards:
Dogs
Cats
Woodchuck/Groundhog
Fox
Deer
Coyote
Snake
Lizards
My husband does all the landscaping - I'm in charge of growing the plants from seed. I like the low maintenance of perennials, adding a cool annual each year. I hate mowing the lawn, but, oddly, it is the one household chore that I feel satisfaction in completing.
My Wednesday? Work overtime (a lovely 12 hour day - every day this week!) and then man the couch!
So lucky to be able to get started on the yard, ours still has snow in it. Come on spring!!!!!
Planning a garden is fun and actually doing the gardening is such a nice pastime! We'll need some pictures of your progress!
I still have snow, ice and a layer of mud in my yard. I am so itching to get my hands dirty. The gardens have taken a back seat to the kids the past few years and the need a lot of TLC and mulch, mulch mulch. That is my goal this spring. I love working out in my yard and a lawn mower is strangely a powerful thing.
We don't have any interesting animals like owls out here in the 'burbs!
P.S. I nominated you for an award on my bloggy...
We live in the city limits and there are coyotes in our neighborhood, too (a creek somewhere nearby). I worry about my two little dogs..they're 10 and 15 pounds...about the same size as a lot of cats.
Isn't it crazy that we have to "pay" for rocks? Equally frustrating: paying for dirt, beauty bark, and grass.
A bear cub in your backyard? Wow. Hope the pets are sleeping better now. =)
The dog wants to sleep in your bed. I know this. He told me. We had a lion a few towns over years ago. No one believed it was a lion. One person thought it was a UFO Haaaaaaa. A UFO lion?

I'm glad that there were no hurt animals either :-) Isn't gardening just like therapy and relaxing? I can't wait for the icky MI weather to improve so I can get out there myself. So I didn't find any power bars in my locker...but I did find a granola bar which I'm a fan of. So basically you were right on the money! Are you psychic?
A desert river? Isn't that what we call a "creek" around here?
