A Heart for Art

I am participating in an Art Festival sponsored by artist, Mother Henna. For this festival, I had to post about Art. It can be anything, a poem, a picture of your artwork, an essay describing your relationship with art, etc. I am not an artist per se, but I am passionate about the arts in all forms and seek to make it part of my life and home.

In writing this post, I have been thinking about growing up in an "artistic" household surrounded by artists, musicians, and actors. My parents and siblings are all talented musicians and my mother and I have enjoyed "walking the boards". My mother also painted and sculpted and owned an antiques and art gallery for many years. I remember my mom saying that good music, books, and art are just as important for childrearing as good nutrition, sleep, and play.

I was thinking of art in its' traditional forms, of something that is produced, a final product, a book or something to hang on the wall and admire. Then I realized this is so limiting, art is the process, the journey, the struggle, that connects us to "flow" or higher power where you feel part of and in sync with the universe.

I create art when I am present with my family and comfort and care for them.
I create art when I provide compassionate and excellent care at my work as a nurse.
I create art when I can make a little baby laugh while waiting in the check out line.
The craftsmen who install moulding, a surgeon replacing a worn out arthritic knee, a granny singing to her little ones, the cook creating a meal, these are all artists.
Art is in the doing.

Thank you to Mother Henna for celebrating Art and providing me the opportunity to reflect on its' role in my life. Your thoughts on art and its' place in your life are most welcome.
Many thanks, Martha

Thank you for sharing the heARt of your art with us!! I love this line:

"I remember my mom saying that good music, books, and art are just as important for childrearing as good nutrition, sleep, and play."

It is soooo true. Even as an adult, for nurturing my inner-children even today, well, music, books, and art are still as important as nutrition, sleep, and play :)

Also, I soooo appreciate your perspective of cracking open the definition of "artist" to see the heART of a craftsman, a surgeon, a good caregiver, etc. So so so true!

I had a favorite aunt who was an artist. She bought us a set of oil paints one year, in the hope of someone in our family being able to paint. But, alas, no such luck. Every year, she would take us shopping and to lunch for our birthdays. She was so thrilled when I was about 11 or 12 that I requested going to a bookstore to buy some books. No one (of my 3 older sisters and 2 older cousins) had ever gone to the bookstore during their shopping trip. Yep, for her, books and art were very important in child rearing. She had no children of her own, so she had to pass on the important things to us.

Don't forget the art you create in your blog! And that fantastic pop art that flies through the air when you get all Jersey on someone...masterpieces!

I was going to say that I'm not very artistic, but after reading how you're artistic, I guess I am, too!

ooooh, love the art message. I also feel the same way about art. I believe it offers a creative outlet that leads one to an open life full of positive and unique experiences. By the way....you are a runner up in the Blanket Drive. I will be sending you something in the mail next week. Thank you for always participating and for always being such a wonderful Bloggy buddy!

You are so right. My art is my cooking and soap making. I do enjoy the traditional "arts" music, theatre and books and try as your smart mother said to bring these to my children as well.

I agree, art is in the doing! Anyone who is truly present in their actions can be an artisan, and artist!

Hi Martha,
I love this post. Most of all I know is art and have two art degrees and worked as a designer in publishing before I became a SAHM. I can really appreciate how you have also defined it here. I think you are very right. Art doesn't have to be a painting or a sketch, etc. it's what you make it. Something your very own that you create or do with a style or care or flair. We are all artists in one way or another.

I just accepted your award on my new post and have tagged some of my blog pals for the reward. Come see :)

I love your definition of art, and how really, we do it any time we are expressing our true nature.

You have such a good heART, Martha.
