I have been disheartened about the recent news about the birth of octoplets in California with the use of Assisted Reproductive technology.(ART)
The clinicians who initiated this pregnancy are reprehensible and unethical, and did not follow clinical guidelines and standards of care. I fear it will cause a negative cultural mindset against ART.
I am concerned for the children. The mother's pyschological state is suspect at best. She has no means of support for these children, (besides hawking them like a sideshow attraction). It looks like my husband and I, and all the taxpayers of California, just gained ourselves 8 more dependents in addition to the 6 children and the mom too!
When I learned of the news of these octoplets, I was reminded of a billboard on the Flor.ida Turnp.ike that reads, "If you can't feed them, don't breed them."
What were these so called adults thinking?
Updated: I wanted to Thank Annie, Mamma Val, and Mrs.Spit for bringing up the crucial issue of the severe risks to the mother's health in carrying such high order multiples. I was amiss in not mentioning this in my initial post. (Not enough caffeine?) I thank you all for addressing yet another ethical issue pertaining to something that feels like it's out of a science fiction novel.

I know...I just don't get it. I hope her selfishness doesn't cause other COUPLES who truly need IV to be denied with new laws that might come of this.
its not the invitro thing that upsets me... its that apparently no one thought to mention to this woman that seven pregnancies and births in as many years is not healthy for a woman. i haven't heard ONE word said about this - and that's where i think the staff at whatever place she went to are really wrong. even if she lied about how many kids she had, or had had, couldn't they tell by examining her? didn't it occur to anyone to tell this woman that serial pregnancies aren't good for HER? i feel the same way about those crazy people in kansas or wherever they are, where the mother keeps having kids. its not healthy for the mom!!! why doesn't anyone talk about that aspect???
I agree. I am shocked that this even transpired. I thought that they check out your current family status before doing such fertility treatments??? I have a husband who is a cop and works his ass off and we are wondering how we will afford a second one. She must have some major mental issues. Was this all a big publicity stunt. Wonder if she is going to be paying the doctor off with the money she makes from a reality show????? I'm guessing the she already watches the ones on cable. If she had money and a husband would we still feel the way we do? Do we feel a little strange about people like the Duggars? Just curious? As much as I'm intrigued by them I think it's weird and admirable at the same time. Ya know? Liked the billboard. Guess she never passed that one in her car :(
You know, probably what bothers me most is that she took horrendous risks carrying 8 children. We hear about the amazing 5% of people who will sucessfully carry that many, but we don't hear about the 95% who will loose some or all of them. We don't hear about uterine rupture, sepsis or pre-eclampsia. GRRR.
I just can't imagine with her rate of PG's that the clinic would allow that many to be transferred. I just can't believe that so called professionals allowed this to happen. Not to mention that I had enough issues carrying twins. Yikes!
Coming from the land of over-productive Mormons, I can relate to this so well. Yes, I am a Mormon, I don't mean to be disrespectful to the religion, but to the mentality of many of its members who feel it is their responsibility to bear children, even if the responsibility of paying for the children's food and education falls on other taxpayers. So. annoying.
Don't EVEN get me started on this woman who was "depressed and lonely due to being an only child and the best way to get over this depression was to have a large family of her own." WTF is that about? Not married, 14 kids, no job, living with your parents....
THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT GIVE ART A BAD NAME.
I don't understand how a single mother of 6 who is reportedly on disability (?) can afford even treatments, much less parenting.
I keep reading the news reports in disbelief - this whole situation is wrong on so many levels.
How did we even get to this place in our society?
The most my former social work clients ever earned on disability was $1000/month- and they were those who had worked for years before becoming ill. Most earned $550/month. How the Sam Hill did she afford ART in the first place?
