Little India in Los Angeles

Greetings this beautiful Sunday. My husband took me to Little India yesterday in Artesia, California. It is so great to have so much cultural diversity in our fair city. We had lunch at Ambala Dhaba restaurant and it was the best Indian food I have EVER had in my life. The curry was so flavorful, the basmati rice incredibly fragrant, and the Naan (Indian flat bread) was just delicious. My husband loved his Goat curry (no, honey, I will not be making that at home!!) and the boys their tandoori chicken. It was such a treat. The picture above was taken outside of a traditional Indian grocery with a display of the crysanthemums that are strung together for decorations for celebrations. We then did a little shopping including buying yards of bangles to give as gifts to our nieces and friends. The clothes and jewelry are ornate, heavily embroidered and jeweled, it's almost overwhelming. I wish I had the opportunity to buy and wear a sari, but not this time. Everyone in Little India was very nice and helpful (gosh, what a change from the indifferent snotnoses that staff most stores), but there was a feeling of sadness in the community related to the Mumbai terrorist attacks. I will continue to pray for tolerance and acceptance. We are all from Mumbai.

Yes, we also love Indian food. The Indians are so very gracious to us when we eat at the local restaurants. Unlike the snotnose brat college girls that wait on us at the chain restaurants like Chilis, etc. We have tried to get everyone in our family into the food and only had luck with my mother. Oh well. Very sad about Mumbai. Terrorists have NO mercy for anyone, anywhere. Who will be next?

My step dad is from Kerela, in southern India.

I grew up on the stuff. Goat really insn't hard to cook, and if you have a good hallal butcher (a muslim one) around, you can get it as easily as beef, and it will likely look just like stewing beef.

It sounds like you had a really great time. I love good paan, but I haven't had it in ages.

I love Indian food, especially Saag Paneer. Can't say I've ever had goat curry. Is that made with actual goat?

I've only had Indian food once - too much coriander/cilantro for my palate. But, my friend used to make some awesome naan. Sounds like you had a lovely afternoon. I second your thoughts - the tragedies in Mumbai affect us all.

Isn't Indian food fantastic?? Mmmm...

My neighborhood is super diverse and has a pretty large Indian community, so luckily we have lots of amazing restaurants. There's no "center" though, like yours. But, its still awesome to feel part of a bigger picture.

Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful, Martha!

Love the pic! I love Indian food too, but then people ask me what restaurants I've been too, I'm like, "None. I have friends that feed me!"

I'm also very saddened by the attacks in Mumbai. I have several work colleges that live there and I was trying to hire someone there for our team until we had a hiring freeze imposed. It's extremely sad.
