A Toast to our Host of The Color Carnival

This photo was taken at a local pizza place this week where we celebrated a championship winning season for our son S's flag football team. I saw this line up of very fun beer tap handles and instantly thought of our delightful host of the Color Carnival, Martha.

Gourmet Chocolates for Pink Saturday and The Color Carnival

A most delightful part of any holiday in my estimation is being the recipient of good chocolate. My husband and sons acquitted themselves admirably in this task for Mother's Day last weekend, when I received a colorful assortment of chocolates from Lake Champlain, Vermont, and a Vosges gourmet chocolate bar with Goji berries, pink Himalayan salt and 41% cacao. (Tres delish.)

Beef Jerky Stand's Stickered Window for The Color Carnival

395 is the road between the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains and Los Angeles and the location of Gus's Really Good Beef Jerky. This picture is their front window which is all covered with stickers.
Their teriyaki beef jerky is really good, tasty and tender, but the brisket jerky is tough, kind of like shoe leather. (Hmm, come to think of it, I've never tried shoe leather...)

Out of The Closet Thrift Store for a Pink Saturday Color Carnival

Thank you for joining me for a Pink Saturday Color Carnival.

Last weekend, our family went to a few thrift stores to get ready for a costume bowling party. (Hey, what can I say? We know how to live LARGE!) One of our stops was at The Out of The Closet Thrift Store in Atwater Village, Los Angeles, California.
This is the entrance where it's not everyday you see a mannequin wearing a bikini and a gas mask.
These panels were hung from the ceiling throughout the store.
This Mona Lisa was my favorite.

I love everything about this peach pink mod dress, the color, the cut, the peekaboo neckline, it just says the early 1970s to me.

Cat on a Tole Tray for The Color Carnival

I wanted to share a vintage tole tray for dear Martha@Menagerie's Color Carnival, but my cat, Abigail had other plans.
There she goes, she rolled a little out of the way to show you the pretty painted flowers.
Oh, to be a cat, where laying around is an art form.

I won't be laying around this weekend though. I'm off to see Chinese Acrobats perform tonight after work, then tomorrow, cleaning out some garage cabinets, (Le Sigh), and chaperoning the High School Winter Formal. (I am bringing ear plugs and a book for the dance, and no, as a Freshman, our son is Not Attending.)

Totem Poles in LA for the Color Carnival

My New Couches for the Color Carnival and Orange Ya Glad

Please behold the colorful, lovely, and Yes, Orange Hued spectacle of my new couch, (loveseat too!), that took 5 months to be delivered. I finally had to go to the furniture store to pick out new fabrics after nagging them week after week and getting free delivery and mucho discounts. They were delivered last month in time for the holidays.

Ooodles of Orange for Orange Ya Glad and Color Carnival

Orange is such a happy color, and it also signals Wintertime in Los Angeles as seen on this tree by the entrance of the Community Magnet School in Bel Air, California.
The school was a veritable Orange Festival with this map painted on the school courtyard entry.
Here's a very colorful mural on a school building.
Laugh is a most favorite word of mine too, especially when it's on an Orange Bench!

This is the aptly named Fire Agave plant in bloom. I will call it the Yaya plant in honor of her redhead temper.

This is an angel from the Los Angeles Public Art project where over two hundred angels were decorated and placed throughout the city to create a Community of Angels.

These colorful glass pumpkins were on sale by the artist at the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. I love the blue ones, I've never seen a blue pumpkin before and it's my favorite color.

Fashion Don'ts for The Color Carnival

Welcome to The Color Carnival and buckle your seatbelts, there is a whole lotta questionable style choices going on in LA!

This bright tie dyed skirt and orange tank top are almost as colorful as the rides at the local Church Festival where I spotted this woman. The straw hat really gives this outfit a certain panache and Screams, "TAKE ME TO AN ISLAND RESORT", (where people drink alcohol all day and won't notice this fright.)
A close up view because it's kind of like a train wreck, you can't look away.
I happen to know as a verified fact that they sell jeans for all body types that actually fit and flatter. I guess this lady did not get the memo or mistakenly wore someone else's jeans, because clearly THESE DO NOT FIT. Also, you might want to stay away from bringing attention to the widest part of your anatomy with embroidered rear pockets.
I kept waiting for a small rodent to crawl out of this woman's hair. How long do you think it takes to tease this literal rat's nest? Hey, Lady, The Eighties called and they want their Aqua Net and teasing comb back. Whoa, time to invest in another mirror so you can see back there.
Okay, Okay, I know, Bad Blogger Martha, Bad, bad blogger for combining the joyful meme of The Color Carnival hosted by dear Martha of The Menagerie with some misguided Fashion Choices of women who had the unfortunate luck of crossing my path while I had my camera. Hot Dog On A Stick for The Color Carnival

Santa Monica Beach House for The Color Carnival

I hope you enjoy these pictures of the Santa Monica Beach House where our family spent a relaxing day a few weeks ago.

In the center of this photo is The Marion Davies Estate (which served as the Guest House) at the former William Randolph Hearst's Beach Compound. The building is newly restored and open to the public for tours.

This is the newly built Santa Monica Community Beach House built on the footprint of William Randolph Hearst's mansion which is represented by the tall white pillars that are the same size and configuration of the pillars of his mansion.
(I just love these orange umbrellas, market umbrellas make me inexplicably happy.)

This is the view looking west onto the Pacific Ocean.

Music Of The Movies at The Hollywood Bowl

I had the most wondrous of evenings this past Saturday night when our family went to a performance of Music Of The Movies at The Hollywood Bowl with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by John Williams. Everything was delightful- the venue, the company, (we went with our son's piano teacher and her family who are also friends and neighbors), the food, (picnicking is encouraged and we brought a beautiful crab salad with avocado and tomatoes, teriyaki chicken burritos, turtle brownies with caramel and pecans, and a bottle of wine to share because with us it is all about the food too!), perfect weather, (cool enough for a sweater and a cuddle), and of course, first and foremost, the Music.



The Hollywood Bowl is a unique venue, it is outdoors and built into a natural amphitheater created by the Hollywood Hills. In addition to encouraging picnicking where you can bring your own food and drinks, they also allow cameras and for this particular concert, LIGHT SABERS!!!! Mr.Williams is the composer of the music from Star Wars and many of the audience bring their light sabers for when he plays music from Star Wars.

To share and listen to musicians of this caliber tampers with your sense of reality. While listening to the movie themes, there was frequently a video montage of the movie and I had to keep reminding myself, "This is Live Music, not the soundtrack".

For the first half of the performance, the orchestra played music from The Harry Potter movies including the main title theme song and also the music that signifies a particular place or character in the movie such as Diagon Alley or The Night Bus. Actor Lynn Redgrave provided the introductions to the music in the first half including how the music becomes an essential part of the character and action. The First Violinst played her violin in the style of a witch fiddling as part of the Diagon Alley theme. I could practically see the sparks coming off her bow and the cobblestone streets with Harry and Hagrid shopping for wands and brooms while she played.

For the second half of the concert, the Orchestra played "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca, jazz from "Catch Me If You Can", the "Superman" and "Batman" themes, and then concluding with Not One, Not Two, Not Three, Not Four, But FIVE, Yes, Five Encores with Star Wars Theme Music. That was when the light sabers powered up and the audience raised their glowing weapons in salute to the Orchestra and conductor. Live music touches me, us, in a way nothing else does and I feel privileged to share in this evening with my family and friends and now you. We can't wait to go again next year.
