Out of The Closet Thrift Store for a Pink Saturday Color Carnival

Last weekend, our family went to a few thrift stores to get ready for a costume bowling party. (Hey, what can I say? We know how to live LARGE!) One of our stops was at The Out of The Closet Thrift Store in Atwater Village, Los Angeles, California.
This is the entrance where it's not everyday you see a mannequin wearing a bikini and a gas mask.
These panels were hung from the ceiling throughout the store.
This Mona Lisa was my favorite.

I love everything about this peach pink mod dress, the color, the cut, the peekaboo neckline, it just says the early 1970s to me.

Thrift Store Thursday

A couple of commenters asked about my purchases from my recent thrift store forays and I thought I would share some of my finds. (Please double click photos to enlarge if you like, thank you.)

I enjoy baking and was delighted to find this pretty latticed cake stand and Brand New, Still with the store Price Tag On, 3 gallon sized glazed bowl which is big enough to wash a cat. (Not that the cat would enjoy it or this is the recommended use, but you get the idea, very nicely sized. :oD)


Here are some other goodies I found including this striped Ralph Lauren shirt which fits perfectly and was purchased for $3. Also, I found some vintage bead pearls and jewelry to use in my sewing and jewelry crafts.


I am always so happy to find jewelry parts to make over into new things and was thrilled to find these NEVER REMOVED FROM THE PACKAGE Vintage Pearl Beads labeled from 1970!!!! At 50 cents each!! I don't think I am going to use these, it seems sacriligious to open the packages. I know, I know, it's kinda crazy, ah well, just the product of being raised in the Art and Antiques business where NRB (Never Removed from Box) is The Holy Grail. I also picked up a fun butterfly necklace and a couple pairs of earrings to embellish some tank tops.


This eagle pendant caught my eye, it looks like someone added precious gemstones to it. I have to get a new chain or ribbon for it and also take it to the jeweler to identify the stones. Regardless of the type of gemstones, it is a nice piece, especially for $3. (That's a popular price point at the local thrift stores.)

I <3 Thrift Stores for Pink Saturday

I love thrift stores and grew up going to them, flea markets, and auctions with my Mom, an arts and antiques dealer. You can also always find fun pink items when you are out and about at the local thrift and antique stores.
This pink rose painting would really add panache to the right space.
These hot pink shoes really stand out on this display. Don't you want to know what motivated someone to buy them? Just a little?
There are some lovely pink floral china tchotkes on this display at Ye Local Antique Mall. (Tchotkes is Yiddish for bric a brac, which is what? What is bric a brac from??)
This scaldingly HOT Pink stuffed kitty cat and vintage jewelry box would delight many a little girl.

Thrift Store Shopping in Los Angeles

I grew up going to flea markets and auctions with my mom, an Art and Antiques dealer. Things with a history and that show their use and wear appeal to me. Shopping at a flea market or thrift store is a form of recycling. I am on a constant decluttering mission, trying to get rid of something after I get something new, (well, new to me). So, I not only shop at thrift stores, but I also donate too.

There are some wonderful thrift stores and flea markets in my neighborhood and Los Angeles. Everytime I drop off things to Goodwill, I like to take a look around, especially since Halloween is coming. Some wonderful finds I have found at the thrift store include a full length leather coat for a play costume, a wool Irish walking cap, and a set of Calphalon cookware and chef's bowls.

The mother of all flea markets in Los Angeles is held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena monthly. Just imagine acres and acres of stuff, antique hardware, vintage clothing, costume jewelry, religious artifacts, horse tack, old pictures, books, and vinyl records. I've been to the monthly flea market at the Santa Monica airport too and it's smaller with lots of furniture, but I was happy to see Rachel Ashwell of Shabby Chic fame there.

Also in Los Angeles is a hidden gem of a thrift store, St.Vincent De Paul Society. This place is huge, probably the size of a Home Depot. They have a great selection of used furniture. I've gotten a very nice sleeper love seat and a wing chair which was reupholstered and Voila, Brand new furniture for a third of the cost. Plus, I got to pick out the fabric and they were well made with a solid wood frame.

Another fun stop on our Bargain basement tour of LA is Magnolia Street in Burbank. There are some fun antique shops, thrift stores, and one of my favorite stores, "It's A Wrap", which sells the wardrobes used in television and movies. My niece bought gorgeous jewel encrusted sandals and full length hot pink gloves worn on General Hospital. My son got a black fedora from "The Mark of Zorro" which is the closest I will ever get to Antonio Bandaras, sigh.

Next time I'm in the mood to shop (not too often, fortunately!!), I'll give you the lowdown on downtown LA including our wholesale flower, jewelry, fabric, and fashion districts.
