Our oldest son joined the Show Choir at his high school last Fall and is really enjoying himself despite the hard work. There is something like 40 guys and 150 girls in Show Choir, so I can understand his interest. Plus, he is a natural born performer and enjoys the singing, dancing, and camaraderie, even with the long rehearsals and pulled muscles.
The amount of work and preparation for the performances is amazing. It is like putting on a Broadway production with blingy costumes, fun props, and intricate choreography, in addition to demanding singing. I am so impressed with the level of talent and dedication, not only on the part of the students, but also the Choir director, choreographers, and parent volunteers.
The Show Choir's first competition is this Friday and I volunteered for several hours on Monday to help finish up the costumes with the other parents and Wardrobe supervisor, "Miss Mary". I spent two hours ironing 15 women's jumpsuits and I have a new found appreciation for my dry cleaners who press clothes all day. That is back breaking work for sure.
Recently, there has been an emerging interest in high school Show Choirs due to the TV show, Glee. (Which I've never watched unfortunately.) This interest isn't just confined to the U.S. where the show originates, but also in other countries like the U.K. where it airs on Channel E4.
Apparently, there is so much interest in the U.K., that this past week, a documentary film crew from Channel E4 has been taping the preparations and rehearsals for our Show Choir. They will also be videotaping the upcoming competitions this weekend in Los Angeles. I chatted with the producer of the documentary, Celia, and she informed me that there is Nothing like Show Choir in the U.K. There, student choirs stand on risers and sing, no dancing, choreography, or props, but she anticipates a change due to the increasing popularity and interest there in Show Choirs and their competitions.
The film crew was there Monday night while we worked on the costumes and the documentary will be aired on U.K. Channel E4 on April 16th after the Season Finale of Glee. Please look for me, I'll be the brunette ironing the brown jumpsuits. More importantly, if you see a handsome curly haired boy singing and dancing, he might be mine.
Have you had any intersections of Life Imitates Art recently? (Or is this Art imitating Life?) Thank you.

How exciting!! I was never involved with show choir as a kid, but I was in several theatre productions. I will never forget the amount of extremely hard work that goes into each production.
I think it would be so fun to be a part of show choir...especially since Glee has aired. I have watched the show and the music is so FUN!
WISH I could watch the documentary. Let us know if it will be accessible online. I bet your son is beyond excited about it!
~melody~
I love Glee!! one of the actors on the show is from our town... How exciting for your son to perform with the choir and for you and him to be on TV... I'll be watching for you in your big ironing debut!! :)
Oh Martha Sweetie...
How very exciting this is. Your son could be the next Glee star. Funnier things have happened. I hope you take some pics and post a few for us.
I can just see you ironing away. Did you feel like Cinderella instead of "Real Glee"? It is always fun to get involved in our children's extra curricular activities. (I now get involved with the grandkids activities and they so love it.) Stay a part of it Martha, he will be out of high school and onto bigger and better things before you know it.
Have a gorgeous day, and good luck to your son on his upcoming program. Tell him your blogger friends are rooting for him.
Country hugs and much love...Sherry
this sounds all super cool!!
i was never in show choir (can't sing a lick)... but i loved watching performances..
and glee is actually pretty good!!
I'm impressed that your son is brave enough to perform! That takes a lot of guts when you're a teenager!
How cool that you're all going to be part of a documentary! Definitely let us know if it will be available for viewing in the states!
How very exciting you you son and for you..It's a wonderful thing.. your son must be very talented, and I know you're so proud.
how exciting!! sounds like a wonderful thing for your son to be involved in to spark his creativity and performance skills (admire him, I would die of stage fright)
good for you too in helping out and ironing! that is a labor of love and dedication for sure :)
betty
I have a love/hate relationship with the show Glee, but I do love the musical numbers. Congrats to your son, how exciting! I hope it's online so we can tune in over here.
You must be proud of that curly haired boy, as you should be! May I say "congratulations"?
I've never watched Glee; please don't tell. My life is full of Yo Gabba Gabba and such. Even nights are taken up...and I'm not even thinking of ironing...
Best to your son--and you!!!
sounds so interesting and full of excitement!
The GLEE show is popular too in Singapore, we get them on cable and so far I've not missed an episode.
Oh how cool Martha! :) That is so awesome that your son is in a show choir and so nice that you helped out, not mention that you both will not be on a British documentary... YAY! I know I haven't checked in, in awhile, but wanted to stop by. Looks like things are going well with you in your life! :) Glad to see that! :)
Glad to hear that your son "is a natural born performer" and he enjoys every aspect about it.

How wonderful for your son (and all the other kids who participate in such programs). My nephew was SAVED in HS by the 'performing arts' ... seriously! I've watched GLEE and highly recommend the show ;-)
Hugs and blessings,
We didn't have "show choir" or anything like that at our high school. I think I would have joined, though. I LOVE to sing and dance. Thank goodness I finally have an approving audience. Kate loves to listen to me sing and watch me dance. Do you think you passed any of those skills on to your son?
Good to be back, many thanks for your kind words. Still not concentrating too well, I look forward to having a proper catch up over the next few days but in the meantime can I just say I love those cat photos, how typical.
Show choir sounds like such fun - I'm glad your son is enjoying it. And to be filmed. How awesome is that.
Ironing - the things we do for our kids. LOL
I answered some Ap on FB before I knew how fully involved it was. Ignore my little posting. The question was do you think Martha is reliable? I answered yes.
My son and I enjoy Glee (he likes the music). And now your son is just a little bit famous because of it, eh?
That's so cool! The radio here is always playing a song from Glee just now (original by Journey, maybe?). Can you remind me again in early April to remember to watch the show on E4, please?
Huge here in the UK, we wouldn't have known what a Glee club was if it wasn't for this show. It sounds like such a lot of fun and yet such hard work.
