The quality of mercy is not strained

Pray for Haiti and her people, and if you feel inclined to donate, please read this excellent article about avoiding donation scams. During sad and desperate times, not only do we see the best in people, but unfortunately also the worst.

Sitting here in the comfort of my home, with every modern convenience in the earthquake country of Southern California, you can't help but think about that last week, a 6.5 earthquake hit Northern California with a dozen or so people displaced and No Injuries or Death and now, Haiti, with a 7.0, (6 times larger in intensity than a 6.5 per the Richter scale), tens of thousands of people are dead, including many missionaries and relief workers stationed there, possibly 10% of that country's population. Think about it, one out of every ten individuals, GONE, essentially in a single moment.

I feel a bond with Haiti having lived in South Florida for many years and where there is a large immigrant population of Haitians. I mourn for them and with them, and I will do what I can do to help.

The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven,
Upon the place beneath.
It is twice blessed.
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.

These kinds of things are what always compel me to pull out the checkbook. I've sent a check to the Red Cross. I can't afford it, but I'll figure it out.

That is an excellent article I urge everyone to read. I myself have donated to the American Red Cross and Plan International's emergency fund. I've sponsored a girl in Haiti for the past year through Plan, and they have an excellent reputation.

Thank you for the links and your heartfelt post. As a Southern California native your thoughts and feelings resonate ... and my heart breaks for the suffering in Haiti. It's certainly a shame that some people would create scams to divert funds and dupe generous people in times of need like this.
Hugs and blessings,

I must join in everyway to the voices of sorrow and the will to help.
Unfortunately I have seen with my very own eyes how "workers" in Red Cross were stealing everything they could.
When I was collecting once ( long time ago) as a volunteer for Red Cross, there was a lady who just turned her back to me: " I would not give a penny to Red Cross" because does not get there where was ment to be!!!!"
Charities are very difficult subjects, because the stealing is widely practiced and well known! How to cure? I do not have an answer, but I shut down my Web Site 2 years ago, when my site was targeted and my E-mail was not possible to reach from the spams.
But the Site shut down worked: blocked the road of the thiefs.

It is unbelievable sad, and hard to understand how something this devastating can happen.
