I am recovering from a "week off" from work that I spent with my extended family for my parent's 60th Wedding Anniversary. Trying to fit two years of relationships into 5 days with family can be a bit much. In addition to the anniversary party in San Diego, we went to the beach, hung out at the pool, and ate like Kings and Queens. Some of the meals I prepared included: Roast Pork Loin with whole cranberry/balsamic vinegar/rosemary glaze with roast potatoes and vegetables, Alaskan crab legs with fresh summer corn and drawn butter, Grilled steaks with asparagus at the pool for a neighborhood potluck, and, Carnitas, tortillas, spanish rice, and refried beans from our local Cocina. Still, it's great to be getting back to the normal routine of work, chores, and family.
Our parents' 60th Wedding Anniversary party was truly delightful and joyous. My dad played with his band and my brother, sons, nephew, mom, and sister also performed. I had a great time dancing.
This is a photo of one of the two bouquets my sister and I got our parents.
There are six different types of flowers, one for each decade of marriage, including blue delphiniums to represent the March birthstone color of their late son, our brother, Jim. We've done a lot of traveling this Spring and Summer with visits to Mammoth, Coronado, and San Diego. I've learned that as much as I dislike packing and preparing to go out of town, that I don't mind unpacking, which I do almost immediately upon our return.
I also learned something else from my travels, specifically from the breakfast buffet at the hotel where we stayed, that you can use a slice of bread to drain and absorb the oil from fried and fatty foods, like bacon and sausage. Very impressive.
This week the boys start school, 10th grade for our oldest, 7th grade and a new school, (Junior High School!!) for our youngest. I have been shopping the sales for both school supplies and clothes, and have saved an average of 40% overall. Using select coupons and buying the loss leaders of 1 cent pencils and notebooks really helps. I also told the boys that they would have to make these supplies last the year and no poaching from my supply stash!
Please, how about you? What is new with you? What have you learned about yourself or the world this week?
*Also posted over at The Motivation Station (except for the cool photo of the boys getting silly on the cannon).

If I promise that you can buy everything you need in Canada and don't need to pack a thing will you come?
I've learned how amazing my friends are!
What a wonderful bouquet and what a great way to remember Jim.
Wow, your kids start early!
The flowers look great. yes, surely a great tribute.
A lovely post - congratulations to your parents.
Congrats to your parents!!! And good luck to the boys in school. Phoebe goes to 4th grade on August 30th.
And then Mrs. Spit can ship everything to my house, so you can visit me...but I'd wait until it's a little less unpleasantly hot and humid. :) And now I'm kinda hungry...for roast pork. And possibly carnitas. And crab legs. And steak.
Beautiful flowers - and it sounds like it was a fantastic celebration. Excellent job!
And the only thing I've learned this week is that my in-laws can be very annoying. However, my husband released me from any obligation to deal with them, so that's something (even though it completely goes against my nature).
Please tell me you're forwarding the picture of your sons with the cannon to the teacher who wouldn't allow the mention of weapons in the WWII paper...
That arrangement is beautiful!! The meal sounded wonderful. Happy anniversary to your parents.
So you saved 40%? I am impressed.
Nice work on the sales! Your kids do start early...sniff sniff. Here in Michigan they passed the law a few years ago that the kiddos can't start until after Labor day to help the tourism industry with the Great Lakes, etc. Since I went to Catholic school we always started way ahead of the public schools some time around Aug 15th or so though :-(
Wow, congrats to the parents with the 60th wedding anniversary. What a great example for the rest of us :-) And the flowers looked beautiful, I'm glad you were able to share these moments with your family as well as remembering Jim.
Things I have learned this week..well....arguing with an almost 2 year old will get you no where, don't sweat the small stuff, and a little mess never killed anyone :-) ((hugs))
Happy anniversary to yr parents! Btw, I hv a new blog.
sounds like a crazy but fun time!!!
and oh my!! those meals sound wonderful!!!
The flowers are gorgeous. 60 years? Wow!
My boys started two days ago. I too have made the lists and gone to the different stores over the past few weeks. Every time I go to Goodwill to shop for books (which is all during the year) I find perfect 3-ring binders as each boy needs many during the year. The boys have shown me websites that have t-shirts and shoes they like at a serious discount. I have them put what they want in the “cart” and then I peruse and order them (I’m talking skater name t-shirts for $9.99 and skate shoes for $29).
P.S. Your dinner food made me drool.
Definitely going to need that pork loin recipe....
Congrats to the parents!
60 Years! How amazing:) Congrats to your parents. (and the flowers were gorgeous)
I've learned that all good things do come to an end
Just popping in for a little catch up and to wish you a wonderful weekend! :-)
Food sounds yummy.
The party sounds great - the flowers are beautiful and what a thoughtful rememberance of your brother.
Congratulations to your parents.
And - I would love to guest blog about food. I wouldn't have time until at least next week. Thanks!!!
I love to pack, hate to unpack.
Your menu makes my hamburger tonight seem really boring... Love the flowers and glad you were able to spend the anniversary with your folks and family.
And I have learned that I worry far too much about things I can't control.
Sorry to have been away for awhile.. life gets in the way unfortunately.
Aww, that sounds really nice. The flowers, too!
